Burlington Northern Finale; Midwest Mainlines

In the months right after the merger with the Santa Fe, Hal Pantti explored two of Burlington Northern’s most important main lines, the ex-Northern Pacific from Eastern Montana into Minnesota, and the ex-Chicago, Burlington & Quincy from Galesburg, Illinois to Lincoln, Nebraska. Both lines became major arteries for the coal from the Powder River Basin into the Burlington Northern era. While the BNSF was in it’s infancy, the footage that Hal shot is just about pure BN. In this program you’ll see a variety of the power that BN operated and the trains it pulled from a nice selection of locations!

Burlington Northern Finale; Powder River Coal

In the months right after the merger with the Santa Fe, Hal Pantti explored Burlington Northern's "Coal Country". Beginning at Lincoln, Nebraska, Hal traveled to Alliance. Then he followed a loop, traveling over the Angora, Valley, Canyon, Orin, Black Hills, Edgemont and Butte Subdivisions, finally arriving back in Alliance for the return trip home. In this program although the BNSF had just formed, you'll witness the final months of what still looked like true BN action in this region. As the Union Pacific shared the Orin Sub, you will see UP trains as well as UP power, which often pooled with BN power. Plenty of great locations!

BNSF’s Nebraska Coal Conveyors; Action on the Sand Hills Sub and Crawford Hill.

From Allinace, NE, BNSF's Sand Hills Subdivision moves high volumes of Powder River Basin Coal to the east and other regions. In this program, you'll see trains from a variety of locations, mainly on the western (and more scenic) portion of the line. Then on the Butte Subdivision, heavy, loud & intense would be the best way to describe the trains as they climb for 14 miles out of Crawford, and are challenged by the Pine Ridge Escarpment & the double horseshoe of Crawford Hill. Trains that often exceed 15,000 tons face a grade of 1.55%, and manned helpers are required. Videographer Dan Millette recorded the drama in full high definition video from earth-shaking ground level shots to beautiful panoramic overlooks!

Conrail Finale; Selkirk to State Line

In early 1998 BROKEN KNUCKLE VIDEO began filming Conrail at a beautiful and unremarked section of the Boston Line. This 30 mile stretch offers a 1 mile bridge over the Hudson River, at its west end, and The State Line Tunnel at its east end. 14 public grade crossings allow access to some beautiful photo locations, and along with 4 talking defect detectors, approaching trains never come by surprise! The grades are not as severe as the climb through the Massachusetts Berkshires, but a roller coaster terrain makes things interesting for train crews and the Berkshire Dispatcher!

Conrail’s Mountain Memories - The Alleghenies

The challenge of crossing the Alleghenies was one of the Pennsylvania Railroads biggest feats. It remains helper territory to this day. In 1992 we visited the area covering Conrail from Altoona to South Fork. Lots of great action was filmed from many locations, some not so easily accessible any longer.

Conrail’s Mountain Memories - The Berkshires

The Old Boston & Albany Line featured a major challenge when it crossed the Berkshire Mountains in Western Massachusetts. Conrail took over in 1976, and although helpers were hardly ever used, many trains were brought to their knees climbing the hill. Lots of great action from many scenic locations is seen, with a variety of power, winter drama & the short-lived Bow (NH) Coal trains.

Montreal’s Machines; Last Stand of the 251. V. 1

It’s the late 1980’s and across Quebec Alco products reigned supreme. The Canadian Pacific operated pure sets of MLW’s on its main line and several branch lines, along with its subsidiary, the Quebec Central. Once finding the trains, railfans entered a land forgotten, with big & small MLW’s hauling freight in much of Quebec & between Montreal and the Maritimes, servicing the port of Saint John, New Brunswick and providing rail access for the paper mills in Northern Maine.
This volume focuses on CP’s Mainline, and the rewards of chasing several trains, along with a look at the Newport (VT) Subdivision, the Quebec Central’s Vallee Subdivision, and an exciting ride on M636 #4739!

Pittsburgh Railfan Expedition

Join BKVP on a one week expedition that takes you to a great variety of unique and interesting operations. The trip is designed to railfan in the Pittsburgh region, but the route on the way and the way back is indirect, with various railroads being explored. The majority of this trip was during some great mid-spring weather, and we covered railroading at some of the "normal" locations, but also explored and found some nice "off the beaten path" spots! In this program, you'll see Class I's, Regional's, Class III's, and Industrial lines. Informative narration provides the account of the trip, but also provides history and other information about the railroads and locations that are seen!

Railroading Across the Heartland; Prairies, Plains, Bridges & Badlands

Across grassland prairies, rolling plains, over immense bridges and through scenic badlands, the rail lines criss-crossing America’s Heartland carry the freight that nourishes a continent and beyond. In this presentation you will see railroads at work in the late summer of 3 separate years. Countless locations are covered as we bring you the drama on three class one operations along with numerous short line and regional railroads. Agriculture developed these railroads and many still depend on it, however the need for energy supplies keeps many lines polished with coal from the Powder River basin and oil from the Bakken oil fields in Northwestern North Dakota and nearby Canada.

As North Dakota offers an assortment of rail operations, with several mainlines crossing through a vast state that is one of America’s least populated, our coverage within is extensive. However, we will also explore operations in six other states, which can be described as a region known as America’s Heartland!

BNSF over many bridges & trestles
Canadian Pacific's ex-SOO Line through North Dakota
Union Pacific's triple-track mainline in Nebraska
ALCO's on the Arkansas & Missouri
Shortlines & Regionals
and so much more!
