B&O Railroad
Classic Rail Images

In 1827, the Baltimore and Ohio Rail Road Co. became America’s first chartered railroad. Innovation followed as the B&O operated the first American-built locomotive, constructed the first station, sold the first passenger tickets, published the first timetable, and became the first line to reach the Ohio River from the east coast. This calendar features the line’s classic steam engines and more. Sales of the calendar benefit the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore Maryland. Located on 40 acres and housed in five monumental buildings, the museum holds nearly 200 locomotives and cars, an archive and a collection of objects that, in total, represents the oldest, most historic and comprehensive American railroad collection in the world.

In Howard Fogg’s Trains 2018 calendar, his paintings live on commemorating the Golden Age of railroading.

Milwaukee Road

Classic Rail Images

Chartered in 1849, the Milwaukee Road eventually extended its tracks across the northern tier of the United States to the Pacific Ocean. Noted for its innovative electric motive power and passenger service, the line’s successes were overshadowed by weak management and strong competition. By spring 1982, all Milwaukee lines from the West Coast to Minnesota had been abandoned, and in 1986 the remaining midwestern lines were absorbed into the Soo Line. Today CP Rail operates what remains, but the history of the Milwaukee Road lives on in historic photographs like those in this 2018 calendar.

The N&W became Norfolk and Western only in 1881, four decades after its start as the City Point Railroad in Virginia. N&W led the development of coalfields in the Virginias, and that fueled the road’s expansion. N&W was noted for the locomotive building skills of its Roanoke Shops. Norfolk and Western features those Class A J and Y locomotives, along with much more. All aboard the “Precision Transportation” line!

Santa Fe
Railway
Classic Rail Images

Chartered in 1863, the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway’s first trains rolled the next year, and the line reached Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1880. By 1929, at its peak, the Santa Fe had over 13,000 miles of track. The Santa Fe Railway 2018 calendar captures images of steam and diesel from across this vast system, so famous it was memorialized in a song that won an Academy Award. Do you hear that whistle down the line?

Southern Pacific
Railroad
Classic Rail Images

Southern Pacific Railroad began with a simple idea: to connect San Francisco and San Diego, California by rail. A century later, Southern Pacific had become one of the largest railroads in America, with lines that stretched from coast to coast (connecting to New York via Morgan Line steamships), and from the south to the northwest. In 1959, SP moved more ton-miles of freight than any other U.S. railroad. Engines featured here reach back to the era of SP steam, and forward to the diesels of the 1970s.
